From geometry to a build-ready list

Building a staircase needs more than riser height and tread depth — it needs a stringer layout (how many stringers, spaced how far apart), individual notch dimensions for each step, and a materials count for treads, risers and any nosing trim. A stair building calculator chains these together: geometry first, then stringer count based on stair width and expected load, then a board count derived from the step count.

Step 1: geometry

Start exactly as any stair calculator would: total rise ÷ target riser height, rounded up, gives the step count; total rise ÷ step count gives the actual riser height; and the code's minimum tread depth (or your own target) gives the tread run. For a 108in rise at a 7.5in target: 108/7.5 = 14.4, round up to 15 steps, actual riser = 108/15 = 7.2in.

Stringer spacing and count depend on tread thickness, span rating of the tread material, and local structural requirements — the figures above are common defaults, not a substitute for checking your specific tread material's span table or getting an engineer's sign-off on anything unusual.

Step 3: stringer notch dimensions

Each notch on a cut stringer removes a rise-height by run-depth rectangle from the board, repeated once per step, minus the top and bottom which are usually adjusted to account for the finished floor and any nosing overlap. A common rule of thumb is to keep at least about 3.5in of solid timber remaining at the narrowest point of the notch on a standard 2x12 stringer — verify this against your specific span and local structural code before cutting.

Interior vs deck build differences

An interior staircase and a deck staircase share the same rise-and-run maths but differ in materials and exposure: deck stringers are typically pressure-treated or engineered for exterior exposure, need ground-contact-rated fasteners and often a concrete footing or post base at the bottom, and are checked against a slightly different set of assumptions since they land on grade rather than a finished interior floor. Common building calculator mistakes

  • Forgetting that the bottom stringer notch is usually shortened by the thickness of the first tread board, to keep the first riser height equal to the rest.
  • Not accounting for finished flooring thickness at both the top and bottom of the flight, which shifts total rise after the calculation was already run.

Finished floor thickness changes your rise

Measure total rise from finished floor to finished floor, not from subfloor to subfloor. Flooring, underlayment and any carpet or tile buildup at top and bottom can easily add half an inch or more, which shifts your riser height calculation if ignored.
