A stair runner is a strip of carpet fitted down the centre of a staircase, leaving a margin of bare timber either side. It softens noise, adds grip on polished treads and protects the busiest surface in the house, without hiding the staircase itself the way full carpet does.
Getting the quantity right is the whole job. Every step needs its tread depth plus its riser height, plus an allowance if the runner wraps the nosing. Landings, winders and pattern repeats each add material, and a waste margin gives the fitter something to work with at the top and bottom. Order short and you are waiting on a new dye lot that will not match; order long and the offcut is money on the floor.
