The logic behind the formula comes from the natural length of an adult human stride. On flat ground, a comfortable stride covers roughly 24-25 in. On a staircase, part of that stride is 'used up' vertically by climbing, so the formula effectively converts vertical riser height into an equivalent horizontal distance (by doubling it) and adds the actual horizontal tread depth, checking that the total still feels like a natural single stride.
Worked example
Take a standard staircase with a 7.5 in riser and a 10 in tread. The formula gives 2 x 7.5 + 10 = 15 + 10 = 25 in, which sits right at the comfortable upper boundary. In metric, with a 19 cm riser and 25 cm tread, the formula gives 2 x 19 + 25 = 38 + 25 = 63 cm, also within the accepted comfortable range of roughly 61-63.5 cm. This confirms the staircase proportions are safe and comfortable to climb without needing any redesign.

A simpler companion rule is the R + T formula (riser plus tread, without doubling the riser), which should land between about 17 and 18 in (43-46 cm) for comfortable stairs. How to use the formula when designing or checking stairs
