What an EZ stair calculator actually does

An easy or 'EZ' stair calculator takes your total rise, the height from finished floor to finished floor, and divides it by your target riser height to give you the number of steps. From there it works out the run, or the horizontal depth, of each tread, and gives you a rise-and-run table you can hand straight to a carpenter or use to plan carpet. Add a landing into the mix and the tool needs to treat the job as two separate flights that share one flat, walkable platform in between. This is the layout most homeowners run into on a standard two-storey house, where the stairs turn 90 or 180 degrees partway up.

The core formula does not change just because a landing exists. Total rise divided by riser height still gives you the step count, but you now perform that calculation separately for the lower flight and the upper flight, because each flight can have a slightly different number of steps depending on the floor plan. A typical total rise of 108 in (274 cm) split across a 9-step lower run and a 5-step upper run, at 7.5 in (19 cm) per riser, uses up 105 in (267 cm) of rise across the 14 total steps, close enough to the target that a builder would fine-tune the individual riser heights slightly to land exactly on 108 in.

Working out the runner length with a landing

Once you know the step counts for both flights, the runner calculation follows the same logic as a straight stair, but you add the landing depth once as a flat section rather than repeating tread-plus-riser maths on it. For each stepped section, calculate tread depth plus riser height plus a 0.75 in (1.9 cm) nosing wrap, and multiply that by the number of steps in that flight. Then add the landing depth, typically 36-42 in (91-107 cm) for a standard quarter or half landing, as a single flat length of carpet.

For our worked example: the lower flight has 9 steps at 18.25 in (46.4 cm) per step, giving 164.25 in (417.4 cm). The landing adds 40 in (102 cm) flat. The upper flight has 5 steps at 18.25 in (46.4 cm), giving 91.25 in (231.8 cm). The subtotal is 295.5 in (751.2 cm), or 24.6 ft (7.51 m). Add a 10% waste allowance for turning the runner at the landing and finishing both ends, and you land on roughly 27 ft (8.2 m) of runner.

Why the landing changes your runner strategy

A landing is usually where the fitter makes a physical break in the runner, because it is much easier to seam a runner at a flat transition than partway up a stepped run. This means you can often order the lower and upper flight sections separately from the same dye lot, which is helpful if your staircase has an unusual turn that would otherwise require an oversized single length. It also gives you the option of running a border or contrasting binding right across the landing to visually separate the two flights, a popular styling choice on turned staircases.

It is worth noting that many EZ calculators are built for stringer layout rather than carpet, so they will give you rise and run numbers but not a runner length directly. Half landing vs quarter landing: what changes

A half landing turns the stair 180 degrees and is typically deeper front-to-back than a quarter landing, often 42-48 in (107-122 cm) rather than the 36-40 in (91-102 cm) common on a 90-degree quarter turn. This extra depth adds directly to your flat runner allowance, so a half-landing job with otherwise identical flights will need 6-8 in (15-20 cm) more runner than the quarter-landing example worked through above. It is worth measuring your own landing rather than assuming a standard figure, since older US colonials and UK terraced houses both have plenty of non-standard landing depths built to fit an awkward stairwell.

Fitting cost also shifts with landing type. A half landing needs the runner turned back on itself, which takes a fitter longer and uses more offcut than a quarter turn, so labour quotes for half-landing jobs typically run 15-20% higher than an equivalent quarter-landing flight of the same total step count.

Material cost for a landing job scales with total linear length, but labour is where landing stairs diverge most from a simple straight flight. Budget synthetic runners in the US run about $3-6 per linear ft ($10-20/m2 equivalent), mid-range wool-blends $8-14 per linear ft, and premium pure wool $16-25 per linear ft. In the UK, expect roughly £8-15 per linear metre for budget synthetics, £20-35 per linear metre for wool-blends, and £40-65 per linear metre for premium wool. Step-by-step: fitting a runner across a landing

Most fitters follow a consistent sequence on a landing job: fit the lower flight first working up from the bottom nosing, stop and tension the runner flat across the landing itself, then continue up the upper flight to the top nosing. Seaming, if used, happens at the landing edge rather than mid-step, since a seam on a flat surface is far less visible and far more durable than one bridging a nosing.
