
The five measurements you actually need
Measuring a staircase for a runner comes down to five numbers: the total step count, the tread run (the flat, walked-on part of each step), the riser height (the vertical face between steps), the stair width, and whether there's a landing, winder or turn to account for. Get those five right and everything else - length, width, waste allowance - falls out of straightforward arithmetic. Most people overcomplicate this by trying to measure the whole flight in one go with a tape measure hooked awkwardly over the nosing; it's far more reliable, and far less error-prone, to measure one representative tread and riser, then multiply, because production-built staircases almost always repeat the same rise and run on every step.
Start by counting the steps from the bottom riser to the top landing, including the top step itself. Lay your tape flat along the tread from the point where it meets the riser below to the front edge of the nosing, and record that as your tread run. Why the nosing wrap matters
The nosing is the rounded or bullnose front lip of the tread that overhangs the riser below. How much runner do I need?
Take a real US example: 13 steps, each with a 10 in tread run and a 7.5 in riser height, plus a 0.75 in nosing wrap allowance per step. Per step that's 10 + 7.5 + 0.75 = 18.25 in of runner. Multiply by 13 steps and you get 237.25 in, which is 19.77 ft. In UK metric terms, that's 13 steps at 25 cm tread run and 19 cm riser height, plus a 1.9 cm nosing wrap allowance, giving 45.9 cm per step. Multiply by 13 steps for 596.7 cm, add 30 cm each for top and bottom finishing (60 cm total) for 656.7 cm, then apply a 5-10% waste margin to land at roughly 6.9-7.2 m of runner. Width is a separate measurement from length, and it's just as easy to get wrong by eyeballing it. Measure the full width of the staircase from wall to wall or wall to baluster at three points - top, middle and bottom of the flight - because older staircases in particular are rarely perfectly parallel-sided. Use the narrowest of the three readings as your working width, then decide how much bare tread you want exposed on either side of the runner; a common convention is leaving 3-4 in (7.5-10 cm) of exposed tread per side, meaning a 36 in (91 cm) wide staircase typically takes a 27-30 in (68-76 cm) runner.

- Measure width at the top, middle and bottom of the flight, not just once.
- Use the narrowest reading as your safe working width.
