From those it divides the run into equal gaps that are each under your limit, then reports how many balusters that requires.

  4. Estimate a trial baluster count and check: (run − balusters × width) ÷ (balusters + 1) should be at or under your gap limit.
  5. Increase the count until the calculated gap fits, then divide evenly for a symmetrical look.

Many timber staircases with a single newel-to-newel handrail use one baluster per tread as standard, with a second added on wider treads once the gap would otherwise exceed the limit. Continuous rails over winders or landings need the same maths applied to the full run rather than tread by tread, so the spacing reads as even around the turn.
