Stair slope (pitch angle) is: angle = arctan(total rise / total run). Total rise is the vertical floor-to-floor height; total run is the sum of every tread run, excluding the top landing. Slope can also be expressed as a ratio (rise:run) or a percentage grade (rise/run x 100), which is more common in accessibility and ramp contexts than for interior stairs, but worth knowing if you're comparing a stair to an ADA-compliant ramp (max 8.33% grade, or roughly 4.8 degrees — dramatically shallower than any stair).

Most residential stairs cluster between 30 and 37 degrees. Below 30 degrees a stair starts to feel like a shallow ramp and eats a lot of horizontal floor space; above 40 degrees it starts to feel steep enough that people descend sideways or grip the rail more, and many jurisdictions treat it as a 'steep' or non-compliant stair for a habitable space.

Code limits: IRC vs UK Part K

IRC does not state a maximum pitch angle directly. Instead it constrains riser height (max 7.75in) and tread depth (min 10in) individually, which together cap the steepest IRC-compliant stair at roughly 37.8 degrees (7.75/10). UK Approved Document K takes the opposite approach for private stairs: it states a direct maximum pitch of 42 degrees, alongside the max 220mm rise and min 220mm going that, combined, produce a similar practical ceiling.

Steeper isn't automatically non-compliant

A stair can meet both the riser and tread minimums individually yet still land close to the code's practical pitch ceiling. Always check the combined angle, not just each dimension separately, especially when retrofitting a stair into a tight floor opening.

3/8in riser variation rule

IRC also requires that the greatest riser height (or tread depth) in a flight not exceed the smallest by more than 3/8in. At the opposite extreme, a fixed ship's ladder or attic ladder commonly runs 50-70 degrees, steep enough that IRC and UK Part K both treat it as a separate category with its own (less protective) rules, not a standard stair.

How pitch changes stride and perceived steepness

Because pitch is derived from the same riser and tread numbers used in the well-known comfort formulas (2 x riser + tread should fall roughly between 24 and 25 inches for a comfortable stride), a steeper pitch generally means a shorter, choppier stride length going up and a longer reach downward with each step. Most people perceive a pitch increase of even 3-4 degrees above 37 degrees as a meaningfully steeper stair, even though the riser height itself may have changed by less than half an inch, because the combined effect on stride length is what the body actually notices, not the riser number in isolation.

This is worth keeping in mind when a tight floor opening tempts a designer toward the steepest code-compliant pitch available: technically compliant does not always mean comfortable, and a pitch near the practical ceiling (37.8 degrees IRC, 42 degrees UK) is noticeably more tiring on a frequently used stair than one closer to 32-34 degrees.
