EZ Stair Calculator: The Simplest Way to Get Rise and Run Right

An EZ (easy) stair calculator is just a standard rise-and-run calculator with the fewest possible inputs: total rise, and either a target riser height or a target number of steps. Put in a 108in floor-to-floor height and it should hand back the riser height, the number of risers, the tread depth, and a pass/fail check against IRC or UK Part K minimums, all without asking for anything you'd need a tape measure and a code book to answer first. This guide shows exactly what those two or three inputs produce and why the simplest calculator is usually the right one to start with.

What makes a stair calculator "EZ"

Most stair calculators ask for the same underlying geometry — total rise, total run, riser height, tread depth, nosing — but differ hugely in how many of those you're expected to supply versus how many the tool works out for you. An EZ calculator flips the order: you give it the one number you actually know (the floor-to-floor height) and it derives everything else from code-compliant defaults, adjusting only if you override a field. That is the difference between a calculator built for someone measuring their first staircase and one built for a framer who already has a full set of drawings.

The trade-off is that an EZ calculator makes assumptions on your behalf — usually a riser height near 7.5in (US) or 170mm (UK) and a stringer thickness of about 1.5in — and those assumptions need checking against your actual site conditions before you cut anything.

Worked example: 9ft rise, targeting 7in risers

Total rise 108in, target riser 7in. Divide 108 by 7 to get 15.4, which always rounds up because you cannot have a fractional step, giving 16 risers. Recalculate the actual riser height by dividing the rise by the rounded number of risers: 108 / 16 = 6.75in. That final figure — not your original target — is the riser height you actually build to, and it must be consistent to within about 3/8in step-to-step under IRC, or 5mm under Part K's stricter tolerance.

  1. 108in rise ÷ 7in target riser = 15.4, round up to 16 risers.
  2. 108 ÷ 16 = 6.75in actual riser height (under the 7.75in IRC max, comfortably compliant).
  3. IRC's rise-plus-run rule of thumb (riser + tread between about 17-18in) suggests a run near 10.25-11.25in for a 6.75in riser.
  4. 16 risers means 15 treads on a straight flight, since the top step is the finished floor.
  5. Total run = 15 × tread depth, which is the horizontal footprint the staircase needs.

Reading the pass/fail output

A good EZ calculator flags three things automatically: riser height against the code maximum, tread depth against the code minimum, and headroom if you supply a ceiling height. It should never silently accept a riser over about 7.75in (IRC) or 220mm (Part K) — treat any calculator that lets that through without a warning as one to double-check by hand.

When EZ isn't enough

Once winders, a landing, or a stringer cut list enter the picture, an EZ calculator's simplicity becomes a limitation rather than a feature. Notice that the actual riser height rarely matches the target exactly — it's always adjusted down to whatever whole number of steps divides the rise evenly, which is the entire point of running the numbers before you cut a single stringer.
