Notice that a slightly larger target riser can produce fewer steps, and the actual riser height snaps to whichever step count divides the total rise most evenly at or under your chosen target — this is why nudging the target riser by a quarter-inch sometimes removes an entire step from the flight.
Steps vs risers vs treads: the terminology
- A riser is the vertical face of one step; risers = the number returned by the calculator above.
- A tread is the horizontal surface you stand on; on a straight flight, treads = risers minus 1, because the top riser lands on the upper floor rather than on another tread.
- 'Step' is used loosely for either, which is the main source of off-by-one confusion when ordering carpet, balusters, or riser boards.
