Stair Height Calculator: Finding Total Rise From Floor to Floor

A stair height calculator starts from total rise — the exact vertical distance from the bottom finished floor to the top finished floor — and works out how many risers you need at a target height, or how tall each riser must be for a fixed riser count. Total rise is the single most important number in any stair calculation, because every other dimension (riser count, tread run, runner length) is derived from it. What total rise actually measures

Total rise is the vertical distance from the surface of the finished floor at the bottom of the stair to the surface of the finished floor at the top — not the framing height, not the rough opening, and not the distance to subfloor. Measuring to the wrong surface is the most common error in a DIY stair height calculation, and it's especially easy to get wrong on a remodel where old flooring is being replaced with a different thickness.

The best practice is to measure with a laser level or a straightedge and tape from the exact finished-floor elevation at both ends, accounting for any new flooring, underlayment or tile buildup that hasn't been installed yet. A stair height calculator is only as accurate as this one input — every other number cascades from it.

Riser count formula

Number of risers = total rise / target riser height, rounded to the nearest whole number, then riser height is recalculated as total rise / actual riser count so every riser in the flight is exactly equal (IRC allows no more than 3/8in variation between the largest and smallest riser).

Worked example: 105.5in total rise

  1. Target riser height: 7.5in.
  2. 105.5 / 7.5 = 14.07, round to 14 risers.
  3. Actual riser height = 105.5 / 14 = 7.54in — inside the IRC 7.75in max.
  4. Number of treads (going) = risers - 1 = 13, since the top floor itself acts as the final tread.
  5. At a 10in tread run, total horizontal run = 13 x 10 = 130in.

Recheck total rise after flooring changes

Swapping hardwood for tile, or adding a thicker underlay at the top or bottom of the stair, changes total rise by the thickness difference — even a half-inch change can push a riser height over the 7.75in IRC limit or trigger a 3/8in variation failure against the existing risers.

Height calculator vs stringer length

Total rise tells you how tall the stair is; it does not by itself tell you how long the stringer (the diagonal structural board) needs to be — that also depends on total run, via the Pythagorean relationship covered in a dedicated stringer length calculation. Runner length depends on total rise too

Measuring rise on an existing stair for a remodel

Measure at several points along the flight width, not just one edge, since older stairs can have a slight twist or settlement that shows up as a difference in total rise from one side of the stair to the other.

Story height minimums and how they interact with rise

IRC sets minimum ceiling height requirements for habitable rooms (generally 7ft for most of a room's area) that indirectly constrain how much total rise a stair connecting two stories will have, since floor-to-floor height is driven by the ceiling height below plus the floor and framing assembly thickness above. When total rise comes out unusually tall or short compared to a typical 8ft9in-to-9ft6in floor-to-floor figure, it's worth double-checking the measurement rather than assuming the number is simply unusual for the house — a rise well outside that typical band often signals a measuring error to the wrong reference surface.
