Length is calculated from the total run and total rise using the Pythagorean relationship - the stringer is effectively the hypotenuse of a right triangle formed by total rise and total run - so a flight with a 76 in (1.93 m) total rise and 108 in (2.74 m) total run needs a stringer roughly 132 in (3.35 m) long before trimming the ends, calculated as the square root of (76² + 108²). Always round up to the next standard lumber length and buy stringer stock slightly longer than the raw calculation to allow for end trimming and any layout error.
