Attic stairs are a different animal to fit

Every attic staircase I've measured for a runner has had at least one non-standard dimension, usually a riser noticeably taller than the 7-7.5 in you'd find on a main flight, because attic stairs are almost always shoehorned into a leftover space that wasn't originally designed with a comfortable rise-and-run ratio in mind. Test the fit before you commit

On unusually steep or narrow attic stairs, get a sample swatch of your chosen runner and lay it across two or three actual steps before ordering the full length - what looks fine in a showroom can feel unstable underfoot once it's on your specific pitch.

Measuring width on a narrow attic flight

Attic stairs are frequently narrower than a main staircase, sometimes as little as 24-28 in (61-71 cm) wall to wall, compared with the more typical 36 in (91 cm) main flight. On a flight this narrow, leaving the usual 3-4 in (7.5-10 cm) of exposed tread per side would only leave a runner around 16-20 in (41-51 cm) wide, which can look and feel skimpy. I'd generally narrow that margin to 1.5-2 in (3.8-5 cm) per side on an attic flight, giving a fuller-width runner that also provides more grip coverage across the tread, which matters more here than the aesthetic convention that applies to a main staircase.
