Stair rods are almost always decorative now, but fitting them badly is still the fastest way to make a good runner look wrong.

Decorative vs functional rods

Historically rods held the runner in place so it could be lifted and moved a few inches each year to spread the wear. Today the runner is stapled or gripped in place and the rods sit on top as a detail. That matters for fitting: modern rods do not need to bear any load, so brackets are positioned for looks and clearance, not strength.

Work out what you need

  • One rod per step, sitting in the crease where the tread meets the riser.
  • Two brackets per rod, one each side, just outside the runner edge.
  • Rod length = runner width + roughly 2–4in so the finials sit clear.
  • Optional: rods on the bottom three steps only, a common budget compromise.

Fitting method

  1. Fit the runner completely first — rods go on last.
  2. Mark bracket positions on the first step, measuring from the runner edge, not the wall.
  3. Make a simple cardboard or timber template from those marks and use it on every step so the spacing is identical.
  4. Pilot-drill each hole to avoid splitting the tread.
  5. Fix the brackets, slide the rod through, then fit the finials.
  6. Sight up the flight from the bottom before final tightening — the eye catches a single rod that is 3mm out.

Use a template, not a tape

Measuring each step separately guarantees small errors. A template referenced off the runner edge gives you a dead-straight line of rods up the flight.

Common problems

  • Rods that sit too high — the bracket is too far forward on the tread; move it back into the crease.
  • Rods pinching the runner — the runner was not fully tensioned before the rods went on.
  • Mismatched heights up the flight — the template was not used, or the treads vary in depth.

Sizing rods correctly

Measure the runner width, not the tread width, and add 2-4in / 5-10cm so the finials sit clear of the fabric on each side. Rods sold in fixed lengths (typically 24-36in / 60-90cm) usually need trimming with a hacksaw; hollow brass rods cut cleanly, while solid rods need a bit more effort and a fine-tooth blade.

Bracket types

  • Open (saddle) brackets — the rod drops in from above, quick to fit and remove for cleaning.
  • Closed (ring) brackets — the rod threads through, more secure but slower to fit.
  • Sprung or hidden brackets — no visible bracket at all, for a minimal look, at a higher price point.

Order one or two spare finials

Finials are small and easy to drop into a stairwell void or lose during fitting. A spare pair costs little compared with re-ordering a single matching finial months later.

Cleaning and maintaining stair rods

Unlacquered polished brass will tarnish over a few months and needs occasional polishing with a proper brass cleaner; lacquered brass and satin or antique finishes need only a wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Never spray cleaning products directly onto the runner while cleaning rods — spray the cloth instead, since some metal polishes will mark natural fibres and leave a stain that is very hard to remove.

Retrofitting rods to an existing runner

Adding rods to a runner that is already fitted is a straightforward afternoon job on a straight flight, since the fixing method does not need to change — you are only adding brackets on top of a runner that is already tensioned and stapled. The only real risk is drilling into a staple that is hidden under the pile; run a hand along the crease first to feel for any staples close to your marked bracket position and shift the hole slightly if you find one.

Runner width and rod length worked example

A 27in-wide runner needs a rod of roughly 29-31in to leave the finials clear of the fabric on both sides. On a 13-step flight that is 13 rods at that length plus 26 brackets — most suppliers sell rods pre-cut in standard widths close to common runner sizes, so check their size chart before ordering a longer stock length to trim down yourself.

Decorative rods versus working rods

Most stair rods sold today are decorative: the runner is stapled or gripped in place and the rod sits over it as a detail. A smaller number are working rods, where the rod and its brackets genuinely hold the runner against the riser with no fixings through the carpet. The distinction matters for both drilling and expectations. Decorative rods can be fitted after the runner and forgive a millimetre of misalignment. Working rods carry load, must be set out precisely, and need brackets rated for it — a decorative bracket used as a working one will pull out of the riser within a season on a busy stair.

Setting out so every rod lines up

Rods that are individually level but collectively inconsistent are the most common failure. Work from the runner, not the stair: measure the same distance in from each edge of the runner for every bracket, and the same height up from the tread surface. Make a simple plywood jig with two notches, one for the inset and one for the height, and use it for every bracket on the flight. That single step removes almost all cumulative drift, especially on stairs where the risers vary by a few millimetres.

Order rod length by runner width, not stair width

Rods should overhang the runner by 1 to 2in each side, so a 27in runner wants a 30 to 32in rod. Ordering to the stair width leaves the rod ends floating over bare timber, which reads as a mistake rather than a detail.

Fitting sequence with rods

Fit the runner completely first — gripper, pad, tensioning, fixings — then add the rods from the bottom step upward, checking each against the jig and the one below it. Fixing the rods first traps you into their spacing, and any tensioning you then do drags the carpet under a fixed rod and creases it. If the rods are working rods, reverse the logic: set the brackets out from a snapped line before the runner goes down, and dry-fit the runner through them to check the drop before committing.

How many stair rods do I need?

One rod per step, plus two brackets per rod. A 13-step staircase needs 13 rods and 26 brackets. Rods should be about 2–4in longer than the runner width.

Do stair rods hold the runner in place?

Not on a modern installation. The runner is fixed with gripper and staples, and the rods are decorative. Only traditional loose-laid runners rely on rods to hold them.
