Gripper (tackless strip)
Thin timber battens with angled pins, fixed across the back of each tread and the base of each riser. The runner is stretched over them and the pins bite the backing. This is the workhorse fixing; staples then lock the crease.
Rod brackets
Open-cup brackets let the rod lift out for cleaning. Closed-eye brackets capture the rod and look neater. Clip-in brackets split the difference. All three screw into the tread just outside the runner edge, in the crease.

Clips are used mainly on loose-laid or removable runners — rental properties, wooden staircases you do not want to drill, or seasonal runners. They hold the runner at the crease without staples. They are less secure than a proper stapled fit, so treat them as a compromise rather than a standard method.
Adhesive options
Adhesive brackets and double-sided carpet tape avoid drilling, which appeals to renters. They work on light decorative rods and short-term installations, but they fail under real foot traffic and can lift a finish when removed. Never rely on adhesive as the primary fixing for a runner you walk on daily.
Rule of thumb
Gripper plus staples fixes the runner. Everything else — rods, brackets, clips, finials — is finish and detail. Do not let decorative hardware substitute for a proper fixing.
