Hollow vs solid
Hollow rods are lighter and cheaper, and perfectly adequate for a decorative installation. Solid rods feel substantially better in the hand and sit more convincingly on a grand staircase, at roughly double the price. Since neither carries load on a stapled runner, this is purely a question of feel and budget.
Finials
Finials are the end caps and they set the style more than the rod does. Ball and urn finials read traditional; plain end caps and flat discs read modern. Check whether finials are included in the rod price — on cheaper sets they often are not.
What to check before ordering
- Rod diameter — 12mm reads delicate, 16–19mm reads substantial.
- Whether the length quoted includes the finials or not.
- Bracket type and whether the rod lifts out for cleaning.
- Fixing screws supplied, and whether they suit hardwood treads.
- Finish consistency across the set — order all rods in one batch.
Budget approach
Rods can easily add $300–$1,200 to a staircase. A common compromise is fitting rods only on the bottom three or four steps, which are the ones seen from the hallway. It looks deliberate, not cheap, and it saves most of the cost.
