Two practical warnings. First, measure the clear width between the strings at the back of the tread, not the overall stair width — mouldings and skirting often steal 10-25mm exactly where the rod sits. Second, check the finial projection: a 60mm ball finial on a rod already sized to the string will not physically fit. Pick the finish against the other metal already on the staircase — the handrail brackets, the balustrade fixings, the light switch plates in the hall — rather than against the runner.
