Why pile height matters more on stairs than on floors

On a flat floor, pile height is purely a comfort and style choice. On a stairs, the pile at the nosing takes the full weight of a foot rolling forward off the step edge, repeatedly, which crushes tall pile permanently and, more importantly, a deep pile can visually obscure exactly where the tread edge is, increasing trip risk on the way down.

Density matters as much as height

A 6mm pile at high density will outlast and feel better underfoot than a sparse 10mm pile. Ask suppliers for face weight in g/m² or oz/yd², not just pile height, when comparing ranges.

Matching pile height to fibre

Wool holds its shape better at slightly taller pile heights than nylon or polypropylene because of its natural crimp and recovery, so an 8mm wool loop can outperform an 8mm polypropylene loop by several years of useful life on the same staircase.
