
Why you'd need to join two runners in the first place
Most residential stair runners are supplied on rolls with a maximum practical length, often around 15-20m (50-65ft) depending on the manufacturer, so a genuinely long, unbroken flight can need more length than a single continuous roll comfortably supplies. More commonly, a join happens on purpose at a half-landing or a turn, where fitting one continuous piece around a 90 or 180 degree change in direction would waste an enormous amount of pattern-matched carpet or simply isn't structurally sensible on winder steps. I've joined runners plenty of times on grand Victorian staircases with a full turn partway up, and done well, nobody looking at the finished stairs ever notices where the join sits.
The other reason to plan a join deliberately, even on a flight that could technically be done in one piece, is stock. If a supplier only has 12m left on a roll and you need 14m, joining a short offcut from a second roll at the least visible point is far cheaper than ordering an entirely new roll for the last two steps.
Where to place the join
The golden rule is to join at a riser, at the point where the runner turns the corner from the back of one tread down to the face of the riser below, never partway across a flat tread where a seam would sit directly under foot traffic and show as a hard ridge. Positioned correctly, the seam sits in the crease at the base of the riser, largely hidden by the natural fold and by the following step's nosing wrap when viewed from above or from the side.
On a flight with a half-landing, the natural and best place for a join is at the landing itself, where the two straight runs meet the landing carpet or the turn. This is also often where pattern-matching becomes least important, since a change in the run's direction already breaks up the eye's ability to trace a continuous stripe or repeat pattern from one flight to the next.
Never join on a winder or pie step
The narrow point of a winder step already takes more visual attention and structural strain than a standard tread. Adding a seam there compounds both problems. Plan joins for a straight run or a half-landing instead.
How much runner do I need?
When you're planning a join, measure each section of the flight separately rather than the whole run as one figure, then add waste to each piece independently since offcuts from a joined installation are less reusable than from a single length. Each 8-step run needs 367.2 cm, plus 30 cm finishing allowance at each relevant end, giving roughly 397.2 cm before waste. An 8% waste margin brings each section to about 4.3 m, or 8.6 m total across both pieces.

- For wool and wool-blend runners, a hand-stitched or machine-stitched binding seam along the backing holds well and can be finished with matching binding tape to stop fraying.

Pattern matching across a join
If your runner has a directional pattern, a stripe, herringbone or a repeating motif, matching it across a join takes real care and usually a small amount of extra waste, since you may need to cut a piece slightly longer than the minimum in order to land the pattern correctly at the seam rather than mid-repeat.
