
The three jobs a fixing has to do
Any fixing method has to do three things at once: hold the runner down so it cannot slip underfoot, hold it under tension so the pile does not ripple, and stay invisible. Most methods manage one or two. Gripper plus staples is the standard because it manages all three, and because it fails gracefully — if one staple works loose the runner does not move, it just needs another staple.
Safety is the reason this matters more on stairs than anywhere else in the house. A rug that slides on a floor is annoying; a runner that slides on a tread is a fall. Whatever method you use, the test is simple: put your weight on the front of the tread and try to push the runner forwards with your foot. It should not move at all.
Method 1: gripper strip and staples (the standard)
Carpet gripper — tackless strip in the US — is a thin batten with angled pins. Cut a length for each step to the runner width less about 15mm each side, and nail or staple it into the angle where the tread meets the riser below, set roughly 15mm back from the corner. The pins point back into the angle so that when you pull the runner over them and tuck it in, the tension is working against the pins rather than off them.
Staples then do the holding. Use 14-16mm (9/16-3/4in) crown staples in a hammer tacker or an electric stapler. Anything shorter will lift out of softwood within a season. Fire three to five staples into each crease, through the runner and into the gripper or the timber behind it, and another three under the nosing of every tread. Because the crease staples sit in the fold, they disappear entirely once the runner is tensioned.

Staple in the crease, not the face
A staple in the flat face of a tread will always show, catch a sock and eventually wear proud. A staple in the crease or under a nosing is invisible from day one. If you can see a staple after fitting, it is in the wrong place.
Method 2: staples only, no gripper
You can attach a runner with staples alone, straight into the timber. It works, it costs nothing beyond the staples, and it is common on light-traffic flights and on temporary installations. What you lose is long-term tension: with no gripper pins biting the backing, the whole load sits on the staples and the runner slowly relaxes, particularly on wool. Expect to add staples once or twice a year.
If you go this route, increase the staple count — six or seven per crease rather than three — and use a heavier gauge. It is a reasonable choice on a flight you plan to change in a couple of years, and a poor one on a runner you have spent serious money on.
Method 3: adhesive
Carpet adhesive or double-sided carpet tape attaches a runner without a single staple hole. On concrete and stone stairs, where staples are simply not an option, a good spread adhesive is the correct professional answer. On timber, it is a compromise: it holds well, it is genuinely invisible, and it is very hard to reverse. Removing an adhered runner from softwood usually means sanding the treads afterwards.
- Use a proper carpet adhesive, not construction glue — carpet adhesives stay slightly flexible and do not go brittle at the nosings.
- Apply to the tread and the nosing, not the full riser, so the runner can still be pulled tight into the crease.
- Allow the manufacturer's open time before laying, then weight the nosings while it cures.
- Expect no adjustment window. Once the runner touches an adhesive bed, it is where it is going to stay.
Method 4: hook-and-loop and no-damage options
Renters and anyone with a listed or newly finished staircase need a fixing that leaves nothing behind. Heavy-duty hook-and-loop tape, with the hook side attached to the tread using a removable adhesive and the loop side sewn or taped to the runner backing, holds surprisingly well on straight flights and comes off cleanly. Grip pads and non-slip underlay sheets add friction without adhesive but do not hold tension, so they suit flat-woven runners on shallow flights rather than deep-pile runners on steep ones.
The honest limitation: none of these methods produce the drum-tight, sculpted look of a stapled Hollywood fit. What they produce is a safe, tidy, reversible runner — which for a two-year tenancy is exactly the right trade.

Do stair rods attach the runner?
Almost never on a modern installation. Historically, rods did hold loose runners in place so they could be shifted a few inches every year to spread the wear. Today rods are decorative: the runner is stapled, and the rod sits in the crease on brackets as a finishing detail. If you attach a runner with rods alone, it will creep forward under traffic and the nosings will lift — acceptable only on a flight that is barely used.
Fit the rods after the runner is fully attached and tensioned. Order them roughly 2in wider than the runner on each side, one per step, and set the brackets so the rod sits down in the angle rather than standing proud on the tread.
Attaching to different staircase materials
- Softwood (pine, fir): the easiest case. Gripper and 16mm staples bite well; pre-existing tack holes are common and harmless.
- Hardwood (oak, maple): use an electric stapler rather than a hammer tacker — a manual tacker will bounce staples off oak. Consider pilot-nailing the gripper.
- MDF or ply treads: staples hold well but gripper nails can split thin ply, so staple the gripper down instead of nailing it.
- Concrete or stone: no staples. Use adhesive, or masonry-fixed gripper if the treads can be drilled.
- Metal or open-riser stairs: adhesive plus purpose-made clips; each tread is fixed independently because there is no crease to work into.
How to hide the fixings
Three rules cover it. Put every staple in the crease or under the nosing, never on a flat face. Match staple colour to the runner where a fixing is unavoidably semi-visible — dark staples on dark wool disappear. And press the pile back over each fixing with a stair tool immediately after firing; the pile closes over the crown and the staple ceases to exist visually.
If a staple does end up proud, do not hammer it flat — that crushes the pile around it. Pull it with pincers, tease the pile back with a stiff brush, and re-fire a replacement 20mm to one side.
Removing an attached runner later
Stapled runners come off easily: pull the runner from the top down, then remove every staple with pincers or a staple lifter and fill any visible holes with a coloured wax filler. Gripper strip lifts with a bolster and leaves small nail holes in the angle, where nobody looks. Adhered runners are the hard case — expect to scrape, then sand, then refinish the treads, which is precisely why adhesive is not the default on timber.

Budget six to eight staples per step, so around 100 for a 13-step flight, and buy double — staples are cheap and jams waste them. Gripper is one length per step at roughly the runner width, so about 9m for a 13-step flight with a 27in runner, sold in 1m or 1.5m lengths.
