
Why the ends decide how the whole flight reads
The middle of a runner is seen at an angle, in motion, usually with something on it. The ends are seen head-on, standing still, from the hallway and from the landing. That is where the eye checks whether the line is straight, whether the edge is finished and whether the fitter knew what they were doing. A perfectly tensioned flight with a frayed bottom edge looks worse than an average flight with two crisp ends.
There is also a practical reason. The bottom step takes more traffic than any other part of the staircase, and the top end sits where the runner meets landing carpet, boards or a threshold — the point most likely to lift. Ends fail first; middles rarely fail at all.
Where a stair runner should end at the bottom
There are three legitimate places to end a runner at the bottom of a flight, and the right one depends on the shape of your bottom step.

The floor finish is the default: the runner comes down the last riser and is hemmed and stapled at the very bottom, sitting just clear of the floor covering. It reads as continuous and is easy to keep clean. Use it whenever the bottom step is the same shape as every other step.
If the bottom step is a bullnose or curtail — the rounded or scrolled step you see on Victorian and Edwardian staircases — do not try to wrap it. The runner will not sit flat on a curve of that radius and the timber is usually the nicest on the flight anyway. Stop the runner on the second step instead: wrap the second tread's nosing, hem the end and staple it underneath. The shaped bottom step then stays exposed, which is how it was designed to be seen.
Where a stair runner should end at the top
At the top, the runner either stops at the head of the flight or continues onto the landing. If it stops, the cleanest finish is to carry it over the top nosing and tuck the hemmed end into the crease behind, stapling into the angle where nothing shows. If the top step is level with the landing floor, take the runner about 40-50mm onto the landing and hide the end under the edge of the landing carpet or behind a threshold bar.
If the runner continues across the landing, treat the landing run as part of the same piece wherever the length allows. A join on a landing is visible because landings are flat and well lit; a join tucked under a nosing is not. Where the landing is too long for a single piece, end the flight cleanly at the landing edge and lay the landing as a deliberately separate runner with its own bound ends. Two honest ends always look better than one disguised join.
Never end a runner mid-tread
An end that stops halfway across a tread has nowhere to hide and nothing to hold it. Every end should terminate at a nosing, a crease, a floor line or a threshold — a structural edge the fixing can disappear into.
Hemmed, bound or serged: how to finish the raw edge
The cut end of a runner is raw backing and loose pile, and it will fray if it is left exposed. There are three ways to deal with it.
- Hem and hide — turn 40-50mm of the end under itself and staple it where it cannot be seen. Free, fast and invisible; the standard choice at both ends of most flights.
- Binding — a fabric tape stitched around the edge. Use it when an end will be visible, for instance a runner that stops on an open landing. Cotton, linen and faux-leather bindings all work; match or deliberately contrast.
- Serging — a whipped yarn edge that looks hand-finished. More expensive, best on wool and natural fibre runners, and worth it when the end sits somewhere people look closely.
Whichever you choose, get it done by the supplier if the end will show. Site-hemming is fine for hidden ends, but a site-bound edge on a visible end rarely matches the factory finish on the long sides, and the mismatch is noticeable.

Using rods at the ends
Stair rods do not hold a runner down — the staples and gripper do that — but a rod at the top and bottom of a flight gives the end a deliberate visual full stop. If you are running rods on every step, fit one on the bottom step and the top step too; a flight with rods that stop two steps short of the ends looks unfinished. If you are using rods sparingly, a single rod at the bottom step is the highest-impact place to put one, because that step is the one seen from the hall.
Order rods about 2in wider than the runner on each side so the finials clear the edge, and mount the brackets so the rod sits in the crease rather than on the tread face. Ending a runner on winders and half landings
Where a flight breaks at a half landing, you have a natural end point. Finish the lower flight by wrapping the top nosing and tucking into the landing crease, then start the upper flight with a fresh hemmed end at the base of its first riser. Align the two edges to the same centre line so the eye reads them as one continuous runner even though they are two pieces.
On winders, avoid ending a piece on the wedge itself. Carry the runner through the turn and end it on the first straight step above or below, where the tread is rectangular and the fixing has a square edge to sit against. An end that terminates on a triangular tread will always look slightly wrong because there is no parallel line to reference it to.
Common end-finishing mistakes
- Cutting the runner to the exact calculated length, leaving nothing to hem — always add 10-12in of allowance at each end.
- Wrapping a bullnose bottom step; the runner will pucker and the shaped timber is hidden for nothing.
- Stapling a raw end and hoping the pile hides it. It will fray within months at the bottom step.
- Ending the runner on the landing carpet rather than under it, which leaves a lip that catches feet.
- Letting the ends drift off the centre line because the last step was fitted in a hurry.
How much length the ends actually consume
Plan for 10-12in of runner at each end for hemming and adjustment, plus the full riser height if you are taking the runner to the hall floor, plus the landing return if there is one. On a 13-step flight that ends at floor level and returns 600mm onto a landing, the two ends and the landing account for roughly 4ft of runner on top of the step-by-step calculation — enough that leaving it out is exactly how people end up a foot short.
