Install Stair Runner: Full Method, Tools, Timings and Costs

To install a stair runner you set out a centre line, fix gripper strip in the angle of every step, lay underlay tread-by-tread, then work the runner from the bottom riser upwards, tensioning it into each crease and stapling into the gripper before moving to the next step. A straight 13-step flight takes a competent DIYer six to eight hours and a professional fitter two to three. What installing a stair runner actually involves

Installing a stair runner is four jobs stacked on top of each other: setting out, substrate preparation, fixing, and finishing. Setting out decides whether the runner looks straight. Preparation decides whether it stays tight. Fixing decides whether it is safe. Finishing decides whether it looks professional at the two points everyone actually looks at — the bottom step and the top landing. Skip any one of the four and the runner will still be on the stairs, but it will telegraph the shortcut within a few weeks.

The good news is that the job is genuinely achievable at home. Unlike fitting a room carpet, a runner needs no power stretcher, no seaming iron and no large working area. You work one step at a time, and every step is the same operation repeated. The skill is in consistency rather than difficulty: 13 identical, evenly tensioned steps read as a professional job, while 12 good ones and one loose one read as amateur.

Buy the runner bound, not raw

Have the supplier bind or serge both long edges before delivery. Site-binding a runner is slow, and a raw cut edge will fray on a staircase faster than anywhere else in the house because every descending foot brushes it.

Step 1: measure and order the right length

Every step consumes tread depth plus riser height plus a nosing allowance. On a typical staircase that is roughly 10in of tread, 7.5in of riser and 1-1.5in of nosing wrap, so about 18-19in of runner per step, before waste. Multiply by the number of risers, add the landing return if the runner continues, and add 10-12in of tucking allowance at each end. A 13-riser flight therefore needs about 20-21ft (6.1-6.4m).

Two corrections trip people up. First, a Hollywood (cap-and-band) fit uses slightly more length per step than a waterfall fit because the runner is pulled into the angle behind the nosing rather than falling straight. Second, a patterned runner has to be cut so the motif lands in the same place on every tread, which means the pattern repeat is added as waste at the start of the roll. Step 2: set the centre line and the reveal

  1. Measure the stair width at the bottom, middle and top step — old staircases are rarely parallel.
  2. Work from the narrowest measurement so the reveal never disappears on one step.
  3. Subtract the runner width from that figure and halve the result to get the reveal each side.
  4. Mark the reveal on the bottom and top step, then chalk or laser a line up the flight.
  5. Mark both edges on every tread and riser in pencil — do not eyeball the middle steps.

A reveal of 4-6in (10-15cm) of bare timber each side suits most staircases. Narrower than about 3in and the runner reads as a fitted carpet that was cut short; wider than about 8in and it reads as a mat lost in the middle of the stair. If your staircase tapers, keep the runner parallel to the strongest visual line — usually the wall string — and let the taper show on the open side, where it is far less noticeable.

Step 3: fit gripper and underlay

Gripper strip goes in the internal angle of each step: one length on the tread, set back about 15-18mm from the riser behind it, and one on the riser, set the same distance up from the tread below, with the pins facing into the corner from both directions. That opposed-pin arrangement is what grips the runner and holds tension. Cut the gripper 25-30mm shorter than the runner width at each end so the pins never sit under an exposed edge where bare feet find them.

Underlay is fitted per tread, not as one continuous strip. Cut a piece the width of the runner and long enough to cover the tread and wrap over the nosing, finishing 40-50mm down the face of the riser. Staple it along the back edge and under the nosing. Leaving the riser face largely bare keeps the crease sharp — a continuous underlay running down every riser makes the runner look soft and puffy at the fold and hides the shadow line that gives a staircase its definition.

Do not skip underlay to save money

Underlay is typically 8-12% of the material cost of a runner install and roughly doubles the useful life of the carpet on the nosings, which is where every runner wears out first. It is the single highest-return item in the whole job.

Neither is more durable in any meaningful way. Choose on appearance and on your carpet: a thick, high-pile runner physically resists being pulled into a tight Hollywood angle and will spring back, while a flat weave stapled waterfall-style can look slack on the riser. If you are unsure, dry-fit two steps in each style with clamps rather than staples and look at them from the hallway.

Step 5: fit from the bottom upwards

  1. Start at the bottom riser. Fold the raw end under by 25-40mm and staple the fold along the base of the riser, just above the floor line.
  2. Bring the runner up the riser and check both edges against your pencil marks before fixing anything else.
  3. Push the runner into the angle at the top of the riser with the bolster and staple through into the gripper line.
  4. Kick the runner across the tread to tension it, keeping the edges on the marks, then wrap over the nosing.
  5. Repeat: riser, angle, tread, nosing, all the way up.
  6. Check the edge alignment every third step, not at the end.

Tension is applied step by step and cannot be corrected retrospectively. If step four is slack, unpicking step five to eleven is the only fix, so the discipline is to test each step by hand before moving on: press down hard in the centre of the tread with your palm, and if the runner lifts off the nosing or ripples, it is not tight enough yet. Staples go into the gripper line and under the nosing where they are invisible; they should never appear on the open face of a riser or tread.

Step 6: corners, winders and landings

A straight flight is repetitive. Turns are where the job becomes carpentry. On a quarter-turn landing, the runner is cut and re-started rather than bent around the corner: finish the lower run at the landing edge, fit a separately cut piece across the landing itself, and start the upper run at the base of the first riser above. All three pieces need bound edges, and the joins should sit in the internal angle where they are in shadow.

Winder (pie-shaped) steps cannot take a parallel-sided runner. Each winder needs its own tapered piece, cut and bound to the wedge, with the reveal kept equal at the wide end where the eye reads it. Expect to add 25-40% to both material and labour for a flight with a set of three winders. Step 7: finishing the top and bottom

The top of the flight meets one of three things. If it meets landing carpet, run the runner over the top nosing and tuck it under the landing carpet's gripper so the two coverings meet under tension. If it meets a hard floor, wrap the runner over the top nosing and staple it to the underside, or finish it flush on the face of the top riser with a bound edge. If the runner continues onto the landing, treat the landing as a separate cut piece joined in the angle.

At the bottom, the choice is between finishing on the face of the bottom riser — a fold and staple just above floor level, which is the cleanest and most common — or wrapping onto the floor, which almost always looks wrong and collects dirt at the fold. Bullnose and curtail bottom steps need the runner cut with a curved allowance and eased around the nose with relief cuts on the underside so the top face stays smooth.

Adding stair rods

Rods are fitted after the runner is fully installed and tensioned. Modern rods are decorative — they sit in the angle at the back of each tread and are held by brackets screwed into the tread — and they do not hold the runner down on their own. Make a spacing template from a scrap of timber rather than measuring each bracket with a tape, because a rod one or two millimetres out of line is visible from the hallway when repeated up a flight. Order one spare rod and a pair of spare finials; ranges get discontinued.

The five faults that appear in the first month

  • Loose creases — under-tensioning on one or two steps; the runner lifts off the nosing when walked.
  • Wandering edges — no centre line, so the reveal drifts by 10-20mm up the flight.
  • Visible staples — fixed on the open face instead of into the gripper line or under the nosing.
  • Puffy risers — continuous underlay down the riser face, killing the shadow line.
  • Pattern drift — motif not re-set on each tread, so the design climbs sideways up the stairs.

When to call a fitter instead

Winders, curved or spiral flights, expensive patterned wool, and any staircase where the treads are not level are jobs where a fitter's day rate is cheaper than the second roll of carpet you will buy after the first attempt.
